Schilling a Gamble for 2009

October 15th, 2008

Curt Schilling will likely have to spend some time at Pawtucket if he hopes to wear a Red Sox uniform again.Curt Schilling, husband of Baseball’s Hottest Wives nominee Shondra Schilling, may be calling it quits.

Schilling, 41, isn’t sure if he has another season left in him or not. Schilling told The Sporting News that he “won’t come back for a full season, that much I know. If I do decide to come back, I would work to the point I was ready and somewhere around May 1, let the teams know I wanted to pitch the second half.”

Fantasy Baseball Dugout Tips: We don’t think we’ve seen the last of Schill. He’s too great of a competitor not to go out on his own terms and this past season was very frustrating for him. Expect him to be back in uniform by mid-season, but it’s probably not necessary to draft him during your pre-season draft.

Nationals Win Strasburg Sweepstakes

October 14th, 2008

Stephen Strasburg, 2010 fantasy starThe Washington Nationals (59-102) held off the Seattle Mariners down the stretch by losing 9 of their last 10 games to nail down the worst record in MLB for 2008.

The Mariners (61-101), who had already lost their embarassing 100th game, blew their chances by sweeping the A’s at home in the final series of the season.

This means that the Washington Nationals will receive the #1 pick in the upcoming amateur draft and will almost surely select San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg is regarded by many as the top prospect to hit the MLB draft since Mark Prior.

October 12th, 2008

Heidi Hamels

The fact that Cole Hamels is dominating the postseason for the Phillies has no effect on your fantasy baseball squad (unless you’re playing in one of those fantasy postseason games).

Instead of writing another blog entry telling you how great Hamels is, and how you should draft him high next season (which you already know), we thought it’d be nice to take a different approach… and tell you about his hott wife.

The Stats:

Play Fantasy Baseball On Your Playstation

October 9th, 2008

Billy Beane2K Sports announced today that they will be releasing a fantasy baseball-style game for the XBox 360, Playstation 3, and PC this winter - MLB Front Office Manager.

I’m one of the few gamers on earth that doesn’t have a next-gen gaming system yet, so hopefully they release this game on PS2… yeah, I’m old school like that.

Front Office Manager sounds like it will be very similar to EA Sports’ NFL Head Coach - manage the game without having to actually play the game. Think “Dynasty Mode” in your current MLB game without having the option of simulating or playing a baseball game.

Fantasy Baseball Dugout’s 2008 MVP

September 29th, 2008

Albert Pujols, 2008 Fantasy Baseball MVPFantasy Baseball Dugout spent a good part of the preseason dogging St. Louis Cardinals first baseman (and superstud) Albert Pujols. He had an elbow injury, and we didn’t feel safe about his draft status.

He did only play in 148 games this season and DID go on the DL… with a strained calf. While we told you so, consider:

We told you not to consider drafting him until the third round. We told you to barely consider him the game’s top first baseman. We ranked him the no. 5 overall player in our top 50.

WE WERE WRONG.

With an awesome finish to the season, Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals reclaimed his status as a fantasy baseball superstud. He is our choice for 2008 fantasy baseball MVP.

Shea-mful : Mets Choke Again

September 29th, 2008

Mets lose final game and playoff hopes on last game of 2008 season. The Mets have done it again in fitting fashion, done in by its bullpen, against a team which was merely finishing out theFrowny Mets masco season.

Another September Choke Attack

For the second straight year, the Mets have folded in September. The Mets lost 12 of 17 in 2007 to end the season and blow a 7 game lead over the Phillies. This year, the Mets played better, winning 7 of its last 17, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the surging Phillies who won 13 of their last 17 contests. Had the Mets held the 7 game lead this year, the Phillies would have only been able to make up 6 of them and would have had to settle for the wild card spot.

Christine Glavine cheers during Tom's 300th win last year. You know you’ve made it when Maxim magazine contacts you. That’s exactly what happened a few weeks ago when Maxim, America’s leading laddie magazine, contacted Fantasy Baseball Dugout to inquire about our Hottest Wives in Baseball series.

On page 22 of the October, 2008, issue of Maxim is a feature inspired by Maxim editors looking through our Hottest Wives in Baseball. The Phillies came out on top in the Maxim poll just as they did in the NL East this season. Featured are three Phillies wives, including Heidi Strobel Hamels, along with Anna Benson and Arynne Blackley. Never mind that Benson and Blackley didn’t play in the Bigs this season; their wives are still smoking hot.

Special Fantasy Baseball Postseason Game

September 27th, 2008

Phillies PostseasonPhillies PostseasonPhillies PostseasonArticle submitted by Kevin, a regular reader of Fantasy Baseball Dugout and owner of Fantasy Postseason.

Fantasy sports are fantastic! The drafting of players is fun, the team management is fun, and the trash talk that results from beating your buddies is fun. For a sports fanatic, it’s almost too good to be true. However, when the regular season ends there’s often a major void in the life of the fantasy owner, as they patiently wait for the next sport season to start.
